Guild’s tribute to the Greatest American Light Orchestras continues with another selection of well-known names leavened with some of the equally good but less familiar ones. Thus, among the 25 orchestras featured here, we find Xavier Cugat and Leroy Anderson rubbing shoulders with Walter Scharf and Frank Hunter.
Guild’s previous collections of “Library” music from British music publishers have proved popular providing a mixture of titles, some of which have become well-known through their use in Radio and Television programmes, and others which have probably never been used since they were published. Why is a mystery because many of these were written by the same composers and were often as good (and sometimes better) than the famous ones.
Guild’s first two collections of music for the Festive Season have proved surprisingly popular and there have been numerous requests for more. Although some of the carols featured here are on the previous collections, none of the recordings are. The highlight is Victor Hely-Hutchinson’s “Carol Symphony”, a 1927 work which weaves Adeste Fideles, God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen, The Coventry Carol and Here We Come A Wassailing into a charming musical celebration of Christmas.
This is our second collection of tracks featuring piano and orchestra and includes many Guild ‘regulars’ as well as several newcomers. Peter Nero makes his Guild debut along with fellow Americans Peggy Stuart, Skitch Henderson, Carmen Cavallaro and Liberace.
It is highly unlikely that any other country ever produced as many large orchestras as did the United States of America. For many years virtually every US city of any size had its own Symphony Orchestra – and from the 1940s through to the ’60s, the number of established major Light Orchestras ultimately exceeded one hundred.
Music for a romantic evening is the theme of this collection which contains a mix of recordings by famous conductors such as Robert Farnon, George Melachrino, Charles Williams and Cyril Stapleton interspersed with recordings from the background music libraries that provided so much music for films, radio and television.
With this fourth collection of Cinema & Theatre Orchestras we are again back in the 1930s and 40s, when virtually every theatre and many cinemas in Britain boasted their own resident orchestra. Not surprisingly, the best of these were to be found in London and nine of them appear on this CD.
The somewhat sedate styles of earlier years were inevitably affected by the influences of the jazz era. Then the arrival of electrical sound recording in the mid-1920s, and the major impact of the cinema when talking pictures arrived, meant that vast amounts of Light Music in its many different styles was required.
What is ‘Production Music’? In simple terms it is music provided by publishers for use by professionals mainly in the entertainment business. Most of it is especially composed for the purpose, and some pieces may last only a few seconds. But there are many examples of light music cameos which have become popular with the public through their familiarity as signature tunes and in similar situations where they have been regularly heard.
This is Guild’s fourth CD devoted exclusively to light music recordings from the 1930s and focuses on some of the numerous European orchestras popular at that time. Many of them were eponymous, with those of Marek Weber, Dajos Bela, Ferdy Kauffman, Barnabas Von Géczy and Edith Lorand achieving worldwide fame.
By the 1960s, although Chappell, Boosey & Hawkes, Paxton and Bosworth were still the major players, many other music publishers had realised that, with the rapid expansion of television and a growing demand for corporate videos, there was a potential market for such music - Library Music.
